The Montana Media Lab seeks interns for the 2025 operating year. The internship is designed to provide University of Montana students with hands-on journalism and teaching experience and to provide each intern with finished product audio stories to add to their portfolio. The program allows interns to gain practical skills in journalism, multimedia storytelling, and education, while also contributing to the mission of the Montana Media Lab.
Internship Specifics:
- Duration: 160 hours split between summer break and the fall semester
- Compensation: $20 per hour
- Supervisors: Mary Auld (MML Director), Mike Green (Youth Voices Program Manager)
- Workspace: Shared office space in the Montana Media Lab is provided
Responsibilities include:
- Assist with a youth audio storytelling workshop at Salish Kootenai College in the summer of 2025. Help the Media Lab team to teach high schoolers the basics of identifying an audio story, reporting it, and creating a finished product.
- Lead a classroom-based workshop in partnership with a school in the fall of 2025. The intern will support the class in developing their story through interviews, research, and in-class instruction.
- Document the workshops and make social media and web content to spread the word about the program.
- Work closely with supervisors and the Montana Media Lab team to carry out other mission-related activities.
Preferred experience and qualifications:
- Experience living or working in rural and/or Indigenous communities
- Skills in teaching and mentoring teens
- Stellar communication skills with colleagues, students and high school teachers
- Flexibility and adaptability in dynamic scenarios
- Ability to manage a variable work schedule
- Ability to produce journalistic stories for professional outlets, especially in audio
- Familiarity with journalistic standards and ethics
